What is the history behind Father’s Day?
Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington is the reason behind we all celebrate Father’s Day today. Sonora had five siblings and her mother passed away in childbirth. Since then, her father, who was a Civil War veteran, raised Sonora and her siblings. In 1909, Sonora was listening to a sermon on Mother’s Day, then she had an idea of celebrating a father’s relentless efforts and selfless love for his family.
The idea spread with the support of local religious leaders. As a result, in 1910, on June 19th June, the world’s first Father’s Day was celebrated. June was also the birthday month of Sonora’s father. Slowly the idea became so popular that in 1972, President Richard Nixon signed legislation making Father’s Day a national holiday and designating the third Sunday of June as Father’s day.
Why do we celebrate Father’s Day?
Our father is an important figure in our lives. He taught us skills that we still use every single day. He showed us to love without expecting. He taught us how to celebrate childhood after growing up. It was our father who taught us that no matter what the family comes first.
It is hard to understand the love of a father as compared to a mother’s. Mothers are more expressive and their love shows in various aspects. But a father’s love is silent, hidden between those lines he seldom utters.
It takes us a significant amount of time to understand the love, compassion, and empathy that a father has for his children. So, it’s good to have a day when we can contemplate and see how every aspect of our lives is constructed by the values instilled by our fathers. And how he is always there for us.
How to celebrate Father’s Day?
Since fathers are not too expressive and it takes a lot of effort for them to open up a little bit, a letter to your father mentioning how you appreciate his efforts can go a long way. With that letter, you can surprise him with a gift related to his hobby or anything he cares about the most in his life.
